China Mobile Harbin Data Center
Sub-zero ice-city computing bastion cooled by harsh Heilongjiang winters
The story
In Harbin, China's famous 'Ice City' where winters regularly drop past -30°C, China Mobile built its northernmost computing hub. With an average annual temperature of only 4.5°C, the facility relies almost entirely on ambient outside air to chill its server rooms for ten months of the year. The massive 330,000 m² campus operates as the primary high-resilience data anchor for northeastern China and bilateral trade data routes with Central Asia.
Notable
- Located in China's northernmost industrial metropolis, Harbin, where winter temperatures plunge to -30°C.
- Employs natural chilled air cooling for over 280 days per year, minimizing chilling compressor runtimes.
- Houses critical telecom big data pipelines, financial disaster recovery systems, and cloud compute nodes.
- Designed to house up to 45,000 server racks across multiple planned construction phases.
Expansions
- 2017: Phase 1 opened in Harbin New Area with 18,000 rack capacity
- 2023: expansion into China Mobile northern regional AI computing flagship center
