Tencent Guizhou Qixing Data Center

The story

Hidden inside the hollowed-out limestone Liangfeng Mountain in Guizhou, Tencent Qixing is one of the world's most dramatic subterranean data fortresses. Spanning 470,000 m² across five reinforced mountain tunnels, it was engineered to protect Tencent's most critical data assets against military strikes and natural disasters. The complex utilizes naturally cool 15°C cave air and local mountain water to chill server aisles, operating at a remarkable PUE of 1.10 without consuming massive refrigeration energy.

Notable

• Carved inside Liangfeng Mountain with five parallel tunnels spanning over 470,000 square meters.
• Designed to withstand military-grade blasts, seismic shocks, and external electromagnetic pulses.
• Leverages year-round 15°C natural subterranean cave temperatures to achieve PUE below 1.10.
• Hosts Tencent's core proprietary data reserves, AI training checkpoints, and critical WeChat backbones.

Expansions

• 2018: Phase 1 commissioned with 5 major underground karst mountain tunnels housing critical server arrays
• 2020: integrated into Tencent Cloud national AI backbone and WeChat disaster recovery architecture
