JUPITER Exascale Supercomputer
Europe's first exascale supercomputer powered by Eviden BullSequana XH3000 and NVIDIA GH200 Grace Hopper nodes
The story
Constructed at Forschungszentrum Jülich in western Germany, JUPITER (Joint Undertaking Pioneer for Innovative and Transformative Exascale Research) represents Europe's entrance into exascale computing. Developed under the EuroHPC JU, JUPITER combines Eviden BullSequana XH3000 hardware with nearly 24,000 NVIDIA GH200 Grace Hopper superchips. Housed in a rapid-deployment modular containerized data centre, JUPITER utilizes warm-water liquid cooling, enabling free cooling all year round while piping recovered heat into Jülich's district heating network to train European sovereign AI models.
Notable
- Europe's first exascale supercomputer, funded jointly by EuroHPC JU and the German Federal Ministry (BMBF).
- Constructed by Eviden on the BullSequana XH3000 platform using NVIDIA Grace Hopper GH200 superchips.
- Features an innovative modular datacenter (MDC) container architecture installed on campus.
- Cooled by 100% warm-water liquid cooling without mechanical chillers, exporting waste heat to campus buildings.
Expansions
- 2022: EuroHPC JU selects Forschungszentrum Jülich as site for Europe's first exascale machine
- 2023: Eviden and ParTec contract awarded with BullSequana XH3000 architecture
- 2024: JUPITER Booster module installation and initial exascale benchmarking begin
