Hetzner Online Data Center Park Falkenstein

The story

Set in the rolling hills of the Vogtland region of Saxony, Hetzner's Falkenstein Data Center Park is a monument to independent engineering and radical hardware simplicity. Instead of buying commercial server chassis, Hetzner designs and builds its own bare-metal motherboards and open-frame racks. Server rooms dispense with energy-intensive refrigeration compressors, pulling outside mountain air directly across server heatsinks, supplemented only by fine water spray during heatwaves.

Notable

• Housings tens of thousands of custom bare-metal servers designed and manufactured by Hetzner.
• Eliminates traditional power-hungry compressor refrigeration in favor of direct outside ambient air.
• Powered by 100% certified hydroelectric power certificates from Scandinavian and regional sources.
• Operates an in-house hardware repair and automated deployment facility on site in Saxony.

Expansions

• 2017: Opening of server halls FSN1-DC10 through DC14
• 2023: Construction of proprietary high-voltage on-site switching substation
