The story
Founded in 1998 by MIT mathematician Tom Leighton and Danny Lewin, Akamai established the modern Content Delivery Network (CDN) industry. Operating more than 350,000 edge servers deployed deep inside thousands of ISP networks worldwide, Akamai's core backbone interconnects regional mega-clearinghouses and scrubbing centers across North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, Latin America, and Africa. The platform delivers upwards of 100 terabits per second of daily peak web traffic while mitigating massive distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks globally.
Notable
- Pioneered edge computing and distributed content delivery algorithms created at MIT in 1998.
- Deploys over 350,000 servers in approximately 4,000 locations across more than 130 nations.
- Directly connects to over 1,400 commercial telecommunication carriers and Internet service providers.
- Delivers and defends up to 30% of daily global enterprise web traffic and media streaming.
