The story
China's 'Eastern Data, Western Computing' (东数西算) mega-project was formally launched in 2022 by the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) to balance national computing demands with green energy distribution. The infrastructure connects four eastern demand epicenters (Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei, Yangtze River Delta, Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao, and Chengdu-Chongqing) with four western renewable energy resource basins: Guizhou, Inner Mongolia, Gansu (Qingyang), and Ningxia (Zhongwei). Dedicated ultra-low-latency direct optical expressways ensure cross-country latencies remain under 20 ms.
Notable
- National computing initiative coordinating 8 core national computing hubs and 10 national data center clusters.
- Channels high-throughput AI model training and data processing to windy, solar-rich western provinces.
- Constructs direct optical cross-connects maintaining inter-hub latencies under 20 milliseconds across thousands of kilometers.
- Enforces strict PUE ceilings below 1.25 for all new cluster facilities built in western hubs.
