The story
Curie was Google's first private international subsea cable entirely financed and built by an American technology company. Spanning 7,300 kilometers from Los Angeles (landing at Equinix LA4 in El Segundo) down the Pacific coastline to Valparaíso, Chile, the four-fiber-pair system went live in 2019. Named after renowned physicist Marie Curie, it provides 72 Tbps of dedicated bandwidth directly interconnecting Google's North American network with its massive Latin American data center campus in Quilicura near Santiago.
Notable
- First private intercontinental subsea cable entirely funded by a non-telecom tech company.
- Stretches 7,300 kilometers through deep eastern Pacific trenches from California to central Chile.
- Features 4 fiber pairs delivering 72 Tbps of capacity with an incorporated branching unit to Panama.
- Connects Google's Quilicura data center in Chile directly to its US west coast server networks.
