The story
The European High Performance Computing Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU) pools European Union and member-state resources to construct a world-leading supercomputing infrastructure. Interconnected over GÉANT's pan-European terabit-speed research backbone, the network joins world-class supercomputers including LUMI (Kajaani, Finland), Leonardo (Bologna, Italy), MareNostrum 5 (Barcelona, Spain), JUPITER (Jülich, Germany), MeluXina (Luxembourg), and Karolina (Czech Republic). The high-speed research mesh enables trans-European distributed workflows in fusion energy, climate modeling, and large foundation AI training.
Notable
- Interconnects Europe's premier pre-exascale and exascale supercomputers over dedicated 100G/400G GÉANT optical pipes.
- Anchored by world-top supercomputers including LUMI (Kajaani), Leonardo (Bologna), and MareNostrum 5 (Barcelona).
- Joint initiative co-funded by 35 European participating states and the European Union.
- Enables federated compute scheduling and real-time scientific data exchange for European science and AI research.
