Isambard-AI National Supercomputer
Britain's fastest AI supercomputer with 5,448 NVIDIA GH200 Grace Hopper superchips at the National Composites Centre
The story
Named in tribute to Victorian engineering genius Isambard Kingdom Brunel, Isambard-AI was launched in 2024 at the National Composites Centre outside Bristol. Funded with £225 million by the UK government, the system went from barren ground to operational Top 500 powerhouse in just ten months. Utilizing 5,448 NVIDIA GH200 Grace Hopper superchips on liquid-cooled HPE Cray EX hardware, Isambard-AI is ten times faster than any previous UK academic computer. The cluster provides sovereign computing power for national AI safety evaluations, drug design, and clean energy materials modeling.
Notable
- Commissioned by the UK government with a £225 million national investment as the UK's flagship AI research resource.
