Telehouse North (London Docklands)

The story

When Japanese telecoms giant KDDI opened Telehouse North in 1990 on Coriander Avenue in London's Docklands, commercial internetworking was in its infancy. Offering carrier-neutral access where competing telcos could meet, Telehouse became the natural site where five UK internet providers founded the London Internet Exchange (LINX) in 1994. Today the campus is recognized as the UK's most critical digital crossroads: more than 900 networks interconnect here, carrying the vast majority of Britain's Internet traffic and financial data flows.

Notable

• Opened in 1990 in London's Canary Wharf Docklands as the first purpose-built carrier-neutral colocation facility in Europe.
• Birthplace and primary hub of the London Internet Exchange (LINX), established here in 1994 with five founding networks.
• Handles an estimated majority of all UK-routed Internet peering traffic across its Docklands campus.
