Meta Clonee Data Center
Meta's flagship Open Compute European cloud campus powered 100% by Irish wind farms
The story
Located just northwest of Dublin in County Meath, Meta's Clonee Data Center spans six cavernous server halls covering 150,000 square meters. Built to run global social infrastructure for Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp, Clonee operates exclusively on certified wind power contracts from Irish wind developments. The building draws Ireland's cool maritime air, passing it through specialized desiccant filters to prevent North Atlantic sea salt from reaching sensitive Open Compute server silicon.
Notable
- Represents Meta's largest wholly-owned data center infrastructure in the European Union.
- Powered by 100% contracted renewable electricity sourced from onshore Irish wind farms.
- Employs outdoor air cooling filtered through custom membrane air handlers to prevent marine salt corrosion.
- Hosts Open Compute Project (OCP) server hardware delivering Instagram and WhatsApp workloads.
Expansions
- 2020: Completion of buildings 3 and 4 expanding campus to 150,000 square meters
- 2022: Finalization of additional server halls supporting Open Rack v3 hardware deployment
