The story

In earthquake-prone Tokyo, NTT Communications built the Tokyo Shiodome and Shinagawa data centers to withstand severe seismic shocks without interrupting computing. The multistory concrete facility rests on massive seismic base-isolation dampers made of laminated rubber and oil shock absorbers that decouple the server halls from ground motion. Designed to remain fully operational during a major Great Kanto-class earthquake, the building houses major Tokyo financial market participants, international cloud access hubs, and domestic peering points.

Notable

  • Engineered with massive seismic base-isolation rubber bearings to absorb ground motion during magnitude 7+ earthquakes.
  • Directly connected to the NTT Tier 1 global IP backbone and major Japanese Internet exchanges JPIX and JPNAP.
  • Provides redundant 66 kV high-voltage dual-substation power feeds in downtown Tokyo.
  • Hosts mission-critical trading infrastructure for the Tokyo Stock Exchange (TSE) and financial brokerages.

Expansions

  • 2012: Tokyo Shinagawa data center opens with base-isolation technology
  • 2017: server hall density retrofitted for cloud interconnects and Tokyo Stock Exchange proximity
  • 2020: integrated into NTT Ltd global data center portfolio
