LG CNS Busan Global Cloud Data Center
Earthquake-isolated maritime cloud fortress serving as disaster recovery bridge to Japan
The story
Constructed in Busan's Mieum Industrial Complex near South Korea's southeastern coast, the LG CNS Busan Global Cloud Center was engineered as a disaster-proof fortress. Featuring base-isolation bearings that decouple the entire building from seismic shocks up to magnitude 8.0, the facility became the preferred overseas disaster recovery backup site for major Japanese enterprises following the 2011 Tohoku earthquake, leveraging direct high-speed subsea fiber crossing the Korea Strait.
Notable
- Built with seismic isolation rubber bearings capable of withstanding magnitude 8.0 earthquakes.
- Strategically located in Busan, the landing terminal for major trans-Pacific submarine fiber cables.
- Serves as the primary offshore disaster recovery facility for Japanese corporations following 2011.
- Won the Uptime Institute Brill Award for innovative natural cooling chimney architectures.
Expansions
- 2013: commissioned as South Korea's premier seismic-isolated global cloud gateway
- 2018: expansion to host Japanese disaster recovery and multinational financial clouds
