Google Eemshaven Data Center
Multibillion-euro North Sea port campus powered 100% by Dutch offshore wind and solar
The story
Located on the windswept northern coast of the Netherlands facing the Wadden Sea, Google Eemshaven represents one of Alphabet's largest single infrastructure investments in Europe. Sited in Groningen to capitalize on transatlantic subsea cable landings and offshore North Sea wind arrays, the €3.8B campus was the first Google data center powered by 100% renewable energy from day one. It draws canal water for its cooling towers, returning it cleaned to regional waterways.
Notable
- Total cumulative capital investment exceeds €3.8 billion across multiple phased developments.
- Matches 100% of electrical energy demand with PPAs from Dutch offshore wind farms like Krammer.
- Cooled using non-potable surface water drawn from the regional industrial canal system.
- Anchors Google Cloud's europe-west4 cloud region supporting core YouTube and search infrastructure.
Expansions
- 2018: €500M expansion adding second major operational wing
- 2023: Additional €600M investment expanding clean energy matching and compute capacity
