The story

In 2010 Facebook chose the high desert town of Prineville, Oregon to build its very first proprietary data centre, breaking away from commercial colocation leases. Designed from the silicon up for maximum energy efficiency, Prineville achieved a PUE of 1.07 by utilizing cold, dry desert air for free cooling. To share its innovations with the broader industry, Facebook open-sourced its custom server, rack, and electrical designs in 2011, founding the Open Compute Project (OCP). Today Prineville spans 11 buildings covering 4.5 million square feet as a key training base for Meta's Llama AI models.

Notable

  • Meta's first company-owned custom datacenter, breaking ground in 2010 and launching the Open Compute Project.
  • Expanded to 11 massive data center buildings covering over 4.5 million square feet in central Oregon.
  • Achieved an early design PUE under 1.08 using high-desert outside evaporative air cooling without chillers.
  • Powered 100% by renewable energy contracted through local PacifiCorp wind and solar projects.

Expansions

  • 2010: ground broken on Facebook's first custom-built company datacenter
  • 2011: first building goes live; Open Compute Project (OCP) launched
  • 2021: eleventh building announced, pushing campus footprint past 4.5 million square feet
