The story

In 2010, Microsoft chose the rural southern Virginia town of Boydton in Mecklenburg County for a major Azure cloud campus. Sited far away from the congestion of Northern Virginia, Boydton offered vast open acreage, redundant transmission grids, and low land costs. Over a dozen phases, Microsoft expanded the campus across 1,000 acres, pouring over $3 billion into massive server halls cooled by fresh rural air and powered by regional utility-scale solar farms.
