The story

Switch, a Las Vegas colocation company, built its second Nevada hub at the Tahoe Reno Industrial Center east of Reno, next to Tesla's Gigafactory. Its first building, TAHOE RENO 1, opened in late 2016 with about 1.36 million gross square feet and up to 130 MW, and eBay as anchor tenant. Switch had left Nevada's utility monopoly to buy power on the open market, and a 100 MW solar project was planned nearby to supply the campus. The cooling towers run on treated effluent piped from the industrial park's plant. A second building of over 522,000 square feet was due in 2024, and Switch projects up to 2 GW on the 2,000-acre site at full build-out.

Notable

  • Switch's FY2021 10-K lists TAHOE RENO 1 at about 1.36 million gross sq ft with up to 130 MW of power, 99% utilised.
  • Nevada regulators say the cooling towers use reclaimed water, about 60% of it lost to evaporation, with demand up to 5.7 million gallons a day.
  • Nevada's tax department described a 100 MW (net) Citadel Solar PV project on 844 acres, expected in commercial operation by January 2023.
  • Switch's SUPERLOOP fibre links the Citadel to its Las Vegas Core campus at about 7 ms latency.
  • eBay was the anchor tenant when TAHOE RENO 1 launched; Switch now projects up to 2 GW for the campus at full build-out.

Expansions

  • 2016: TAHOE RENO 1 opens in November (about 1.36 million gross sq ft, up to 130 MW); public launch in February 2017
  • 2020: construction of TAHOE RENO 2 accelerated and site preparation begun for TAHOE RENO 3
  • 2021: work starts on an effluent-water pipeline so the campus can run on recycled water
  • 2024: TAHOE RENO 2 (over 522,000 sq ft, up to 55 MW) scheduled to open in May
