Teraco JB4 Bredell Data Center
Massive 50 MW standalone hyperscale facility in Gauteng built to mitigate grid loadshedding
The story
Rising out of the Bredell industrial corridor northeast of Johannesburg, Teraco JB4 is the largest standalone commercial data center on the African continent. Spanning 50,000 square meters with 50 MW of critical IT capacity, JB4 was built to accommodate the surge of hyperscale cloud deployments from Microsoft, Amazon, and Google. Sited with its own dedicated 132 kV electrical substation and huge diesel reserves, JB4 operates with total immunity to national load-shedding cycles.
Notable
- The largest standalone commercial colocation data center facility on the African continent.
- Engineered to deliver up to 50 MW of critical power across 50,000 square meters of building area.
- Features a dedicated 132 kV electrical substation and millions of liters of on-site diesel fuel reserves.
- Anchors the primary South African cloud availability zones for global hyperscalers.
Expansions
- 2022: Phase 1 commissioned with 19 MW of critical IT load across 25,000 m²
- 2024: Phase 2 expansion advancing toward 50 MW total capacity across 50,000 m²
