60 Hudson Street (Western Union Building)
Historic 1930 Western Union art deco telegraph headquarters turned premier global carrier hotel
The story
Completed in 1930 as the worldwide headquarters of the Western Union Telegraph Company, 60 Hudson Street was designed by Ralph Walker in Dutch brick Art Deco style. When telegraphy yielded to fiber optics, the building's massive copper conduit risers and heavy floor loadings made it the natural hub for trans-Atlantic cables landing on the Atlantic coast. Today 60 Hudson is one of the world's dense carrier hotels, with hundreds of global telcos, content providers, and financial networks cross-connecting in its second-floor Meet-Me Room.
